Our Take on the White Cage

Many hockey players wonder, "How do I look better when I play?" Some people may tell you how you look does not matter, but in reality it does.  Here at Hockey GearHeads we believe in a look good, feel good, play good mentality, which may sound foolish.  But think about it, if you are not confident in your gear and how it looks, than how are you going to be confident that you can play well.

Now back to the main point, do white cages look good.  YES!  A white cage on anything but a white helmet looks really good.  It just has a clean and fresh appearance to it.  This is a great way to boost your swag when you are out there on the ice, and as I said earlier, this is only going to boost your game.   And, not only does it look great, but the white blends with the ice and boards to expand vision.

If you are thinking about getting that new helmet, or want to revive an old bucket, through on some white bars and you got the freshest look out there.

Easton EQ50 Skates: Review

Rating: (Out of 5)
Overall Performance: 4.8
Comfort: 4.9
Durability: 4
Protection: 3.9
Weight: 5
Appearance: 4

The EQ series is known for the extreme lightweight products, and these skates are no different.  The EQ50 skates are made to fit the foot of the skater very well to make the stride feel more pure with less "clunking."  The low weight also helps with the pure feel of the skate.  This is an expensive skate, with $500 plus price tag, but the EQ40 is a less expensive alternative to the EQ50.

As mentioned before, the best thing about this skate is the great lack of weight.  The EQ50 skates are so light because of the almost full carbon fiber frame construction, a strong yet light material to retain stiffness during skating without adding extra weight.  One skate weighs in at only 29.63 ounces, less than 2 pounds, with speed of the game constantly increasing, every ounce counts.  The next cutting edge feature the EQ50 skate offers is the great fit to the foot it has, with anyone's foot.  The thermally, or heat, activated fusion foam technology that forms to the curves of the skaters foot that allows for such a close feel, its like skating barefoot.  To keep the skate light and dry, the Easton incorporated a dry flow system that lets out excess moisture and heat from the skate, without making the foot cold.  This allows more stiffness in the skate throughout the game to give the skater an edge late in the third period.  Now, one may think that Easton completely abandoned protection in the EQ50 skate, this is not true.  It surely is not the most thickly padded skate out there, but it surely does offer a lot of protection with all that carbon fiber that was used.
The appearance of these skates is nice, but nothing extremely special, just a clean look.  As I said earlier, one distinct drawback is the high price point of the EQ50 skate, but the great performance is well worth the price.  If the price is just too out of reach, the EQ40 skate is a great alternative that offers many of the same features and great performance for a significant amount less.

The EQ50 skates are so great because of:

  • Extreme lightweight
  • Great fit
  • Carbon fiber frame
  • Pure stride feel
  • Not much sacrificed protection
I would recommend the Easton EQ50 skates to a serious player looking for a lightweight skate,
and the Easton EQ40 skates to a serious player looking for a great skate at a reasonable price.

Eddy GT Ultimate III: Review

Rating: (Out of 5)
Overall Performance: 3.8
Durability: 4.8
Protection: 4.3
Weight: 3.2
Look: 3.5 (White Cage: 4.5)

The Eddy GT Ultimate III is the first goalie product to be reviewed here at Hockey GearHeads, and its a very solid product.  It is very affordable compared to other goalie masks, but offers protection suited for high level play.  Eddy Masks has been making masks for years and are very good at what they do.

The Eddy GT Ultimate III is handcrafted in Canada by Eddy professionals.  One of the greatest things about this mask is the vision.  Even with a square cage, the goalie can see exceptionally well and track the puck with little to no trouble at all with bars getting in the way.  From a protection standpoint, this mask is up to par.  It is made from strong composite material with Kevlar reinforced chin and forehead.  The inside has two foams, the outer being a high density thick foam to absorb impact, the other is a more soft and malleable material to comfort the head.  This helmet is protective enough for play through juniors, but may not be suitable for college play.  The GT Ultimate III is also one of the most durable masks out there, it could be called a tank. Great durability is a common thing with Eddy masks. The look of the mask is exceptional with the white cat-eye cage, but they cat is illegal, with a regular chrome square cage it looks quite regular.  The GT Ultimate III is also priced extremely well for the performance it offers.  One drawback to the GT Ultimate III is the weight.  It is not excessively heavy, but does weigh a little more than other masks in its price range.

The Eddy GT Ultimate III is great because of:
  • Price
  • Protection
  • Vision
I would recommend the Eddy GT Ultimate III to any goalie with a mid sized budget playing 16U or anything under that.

Bauer 4 Roll Gloves: Review

Rating: (Out of 5)
Overall Performance: 4.5
Comfort: 4.8
Durability: 4.5
Protection: 4.8
Appearance: 4.2

The Bauer 4 Roll gloves are some of the best gloves on the market because they are: protective, comfortable, lightweight, and they look great.  These gloves are not only popular with many pros but with youth and college players alike.  They are a great set of gloves at a great price.

The Bauer 4 Rolls are so great for a few reasons.  First of all, the gloves extremely comfortable.  They are made with a moisture wicking material on the inside to keep a nice dry fit all throughout the game.  The material is also extremely soft and quite warm, making the 4 Rolls some of the most comfortable gloves money can buy.  While they are soft and comfy on the inside, the outside is made with lightweight, but high density EPP foam.  The material is extremely strong, durable, and protective to defend against even the hardest slash.  When you put the glove on or just hold it, you will realize the strength of the foam, and immediately have the peace of mind that your hands are safe in these gloves.  The outside of the Bauer 4 Rolls is another extremely durable material to match the EPP foam inside of it.  The fit of the glove is the standard volume fit, with a lot of space around the wrist to allow for greater dexterity.  Although, some people opt for a more snug fit, so the 4 Rolls may not be the glove for them.  The fingers of the Bauer 4 Rolls break at the knuckles form maximum dexterity of the finger while remaining very protective.  Along with all these specs, the 4 Rolls are just a great looking glove.  They are extremely customizable with many different colors to choose from.

The Bauer 4 Roll gloves are extremely popular at every level of play because they are:
  • Protective
  • Lightweight
  • Durable
  • Comfortable
  • They look great
I  recommend the Bauer 4 Rolls for any player looking for a high level glove with excellent protection.

Bauer TotalOne Stick: Review

Rating: (Out of 5)
Overall Performance: 4.9
Weight: 4.5
Feel: 5
Durability: 4
Appearance: 4.8 (LE: 5)

The Bauer TotalOne offers just about everything you want from a stick.  It has the newest technology, it looks great, and is  one of the lightest sticks on the market right now, weighing in at 433 grams on the standard senior 87 flex.  It has a double concave sidewalls with squared off sides, typical to the Supreme series.  It was also featured as our #1 stick in our countdown of the Top 5 Hockey Sticks as of March 2012, making it to be what we think, the best stick out there.

The TotalOne is designed to give the shooter the hardest and most accurate shot they can take at their level.  With a redesigned flex point in the middle, called midkick, it transfers the power to where the shooter is going to have his hand rather than down below it.  This is going to allow for optimal power on slappers.  Bauer has also added more material to the point of the stick where the shaft meets the blade, the increased rigidity at theis point allows the shooter to fire with more power and accuraracy because the blade will not open up when the shot is taken.  The new blade core, Power Core III, will give the blade more durability and stiffness, while remaining extremely light and balanced.  The TotalOne, comes in grip, regular, and Limited Edition (LE) finishes.  The LE finish is more of a matte feel than the others.

The Bauer TotalOne is one of the best made sticks on the market because of:

  • Durability
  • Lightweight
  • Balanced and comfortable feel
  • Midkick technology
  • Power Core III technology
If I had to give a recommendation on a stick right now it would be the Bauer Supreme TotalOne.
